DIY: Flower Bud Vases from Nail Polish Bottles

Got a few empty nail polish bottles laying around? Upcycle them into colorful flower bud vases! What's great about this DIY tutorial is that you probably have most (if not all) of these craft supplies at home, which makes this a really easy and cheap project to make.

I always find myself picking flowers from my yard and I love that I now have mini bud vases to display them in. You can use artificial flowers too. Create a bunch and add them to any room for a pop of color!

Materials:
• Dry or almost empty nail polish bottle
• Disposable plastic cup
• Spray paint (color of your choice)
• Newspaper
• Button
• Yarn, ribbon or twine
• Scissors (just got these Fiskars and love them!)

Steps:
• Peel off any existing labels from the nail polish bottle. If it does not remove easily, try soaking it in warm water or check out this video for additional tips.
• Pour any remaining nail polish from the bottle into a plastic cup and toss out.

• Place the bottle on newspaper sheets to protect your workspace and spray paint until it is completely covered. A few light coats should do the trick. Follow the manufacturer's directions when painting and always work in a well-ventilated area. Let dry.
• Run the button through your yarn until it reaches the center of the yarn. Wrap the yarn around the top of the bottle. Tie a knot at the back of the bottle or behind the button and cut off any excess yarn.
• Before adding water or a flower bud to the vase, make sure the nail polish inside the bottle is completely dry. You may need to let it dry overnight. Dab a qtip or toothpick inside to check before proceeding.

  7. I absolutely love this idea! I'm the total kiss of death to all flowers in our garden, though, but have a few wee artificial flowers hanging around and it seems a shame to just keep them stuffed in a drawer...this is ideal!

Would it work to just swirl the dredges of left-over polish around in the bottle to color it from the inside, then let dry (instead of spray painting it)?

    1. Hi There - I suppose that would work too! Just keep in mind that if there is any printing or graphics on the bottle, it won't be covered with that method. Thanks for the idea!

Couldn't you pour a little nail polish remove and swish with the cap on to remove any remaining nail polish inside then rinse in warm soapy water ? I don't think cut flowers would do so well in water that has nail polish residue in it. Fake flower would be fine but cut flowers might die if the water isn't clean. Just saying ...

    1. If the polish inside is nice and dry it shouldn't matter. When you polish your nails it doesn't wash off in water. And cut flowers are going to die after a few days even in clean water...

When I first saw the pic I thought the twine was some of those decrative hair elastics for little girls. If you make these for a little girl's room you could use those and not even have to get the glue gun out. Might be a fun craft for a sleepover!

I tried that and my flowers died after one day... I did it without painting the bottles and i could see that the water become a little bit milky... Is it maybe because there were some remains of nailpolish left?

    1. Hi There! First, I would try to pour out as much of the nail polish as possible. Next, I would let it dry thoroughly so that it is hard as a rock. This should help a bit, but your flowers are probably not going to last more than a couple days either way since it's such a small vase. You can always substitute with artificial flowers!
