I've been wanting to experiment with string art for a while, so when Lion Brand Yarn's came to me with a craft challenge using their new Bonbons, I jumped right on it! Although I'm not much of a knit and crochet kind of gal, I still love experimenting with new ways to use yarn for my DIY projects. For this week's DIY, I created a piece of custom wall art using yarn and nails. If you know how to use a hammer and can wrap a piece of yarn, then your project will turn out just fabulous. A custom monogram or an inspirational word would also make a great pattern for this string art project. Any other ideas? Share them in the comments section and follow the steps below to make your very own!
• Yarn (I used Lion Brand Yarn Bonbons in 3 colors: purple, palest lavender and tan)
• Piece of wood at least 1/2 inch thick
• Printout of your desired pattern
• Box of nails

• Scissors
• Tape

Steps:
• Cut out your desired pattern.
• Tape the pattern directly onto the piece of wood.
• Nail around the edges of your pattern using a hammer. The nails can be as far apart as you wish, but I would recommend about 1/4 inch apart for smaller patterns and up to 1 inch apart for larger ones.
• Remove the pattern so that only the nails remain on the wood.
• Grab your string and tie a knot around one of the nails to secure in place.
• Grab your string and tie a knot around one of the nails to secure in place.
• Start wrapping the string back and forth around the nails. The best part is there is no right or wrong way to do this. Just have fun wrapping away!
• Continue wrapping until you've reached your desired look. Get creative and experiment with switching between different colors of string.
• Once complete, tie the end of the string to one of the nails and cut off any excess.

ReplyDeleteCan you recommend a link where one can download/print off patterns?
ReplyDeleteHi There - I don't have a particular site that I use, but try googling "flower pattern" or whatever else you are looking for. There are tons of images you can choose from. Good luck!
Deletedo you have any more ideas for the string art?
ReplyDeleteI've always thought this would look cool if you nail directly to the wall. Maybe your name or initials?
